Sentence Correction Comparisons May 31, 2007

I am back again after a long break. I have been busy receiving my parents, who are on a visit to the US. I am totally consumed with being the guide to the NY City
Finally, I found some time to do a little preparation on one of my weakest links on the exam, Sentence Correction. I skimmed through the Comparisons chapter from the SC book, and also was very attentive in Wednesday’s class. It was the penultimate class and definitely had some very discussion on SC and Geometry.
As I noted in my previous posts about the GMAT Prep results, I have been losing heavily on DS, SC and RC. I believe that my skills on all those sections need improvement and it looks pretty much attainable. I need more practice on SC to logically dissect the statements and use Process of Elimination.
Right now, my hit rate in SC is around 80% but I am hoping that it would improve in a few days.

Absolutely no progress. I have some familial obligations to take care of. I will be busy for the most of the long weekend. I will have to find some time to really pull it all together and fine tune my verbal skills apart from the practice that I need. Crossing 700 is of utmost importance to boost up my application which is devoid of any major extracurricular achievements. I have been passionate about a lot of things and it is time I pursue at least a few of them.
I run the risk of being called a “drama queen” as and when I start to list out how difficult it is, how tough it is to find time and how hard it is to improve on verbal. But letting out these things does really help me start afresh with my prep. I will not let the GMAT dominate me.
Resolution for the day :
Be the master of your Destiny.

Same story, different day.
The difference though is in the types of questions that I messed up this time. I have found out that I need a lot of improvement in my Sentence Correction and Reading comprehension skills. The below is the list of number of errors on each section
| Test | PS | DS | CR | SC | RC | Date | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GMATPrep 1 | 4 | 7 | 3 | 5 | 7 | 05/24/07 | 660(Q49,V32) |
| GMATPrep 2 | 3 | 8 | 3 | 7 | 4 | 05/25/07 | 660(Q48,V32) |

Dismal score !!
Seems like I have to improve by leaps and bounds to touch my magic mark. RCs turned out be my biggest pain. I lost 5 out of 6 RC questions in the first 15 questions. This is partly due to my inexperience with time management and partly due to the complexity of the passages. I have to improve a whole of hundred points in the next month.
Lessons learnt (assuming GMATPrep is the closest to the real exam)
- Practice time management
- Practice more and more RCs under timed conditions
- Be an active reader on RCs and SCs
- Complete OG11 and Verbal Prep in and out twice or thrice with explanations.
- Complete as many practice tests as possible.
Accuracy in verbal, a distant dream May 23, 2007

The major hurdle for me, as far as GMAT is concerned, remains to be my verbal score. I have been trying through the questions being asked and am able to come up with right solutions 80-90% of the time if I am not under any time pressure. I am reasonably happy with the accuracy but would like to get to that hit rate under timed conditions. Based on the test taking experiences of a couple of my friends, I feel I need more and more practice to achieve the quickness.
I am planning to take GMATPrep 1 tonight to gauge my readiness. If things look up, I might schedule for the exam in a month’s time. If not, time for more practice.
Practice questions on GMATPrep PS May 22, 2007

I have been pressed for time these days because of the amount of time I have had to spend on office work. I see a big opportunity at work and am willing to grab the challenge. As a result of this my preparation is taking a back seat.
In order not to lose it all, I solved 15 questions in GMATPrep PS practice. I solved 14 out of 15 and guess what, probability is really killing me. More than the complexity, its the fear thats getting to me. I need to work more at it if I were to entertain any dreams of getting a 50 in quant. I am going to work on some more of the quant and may be a little bit of RC and CR

It was a disaster. I scored a measly 680 (q47,v34). I was hoping that I would score above 700 but I could not. I was too sleepy and disappointed to even go through the questions. I will post the review if I get a chance to review it
GMAT Sets Math no 22 May 18, 2007

I have chanced upon a post in testmagic which suggested that test takers get GMAT sets for more practice. The GMAT sets from 21-30 can be freely downloaded from the Yahoo Groups named GMATNetwork.
Since I wanted to do some cross training, I went ahead and completed Math set no 22 in timed conditions.
The results are as follow
| Subject | No Of Questions | Correct | wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative | 37 | 34 | 3 |
I am hopeful that I am on the right track since two of the three errors I committed were careless errors.
What a relief on a Friday!!
Sentence Correction — Tense, mood and voice May 18, 2007

I went back to Verb tense, mood and voice strategy chapter of the Sentence Correction guide. There is always something that I uncover when I reread the chapter. As I have been away from any real studying for a long time, this exercise has reinforced the importance of revision. A point to be noted. Ever since I started preparing for GMAT, I have become conscious about my sentence formation. Looks like this is an offshoot of a troubled mind
After completing the chapter, I have started attacking the problems from Official Verbal guide. Out of the 10 questions, I could get 8 of them right. I have to still go through the forums for any help with the questions that I got wrong. May be I will start posting them here, helping me to keep a tab on my mistakes.
Update : I have completed the questions for the above topic from OG11 and made 13/16 . Not bad but need to improve it to 100% hit rate

Completed Sentence Correction chapters Pronouns and Modifiers from the Manhattan SC book. Also, completed Pronoun related questions from Purple Verbal and OG11. The hit rate was close to 90% in both of them. I am planning to hit Critical Reasoning questions and Modifiers in today’s sitting
